Connecticut
Mashantucket Tribe to fight union in court

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut filed objections to a labor union vote on Monday and said the fight could continue in federal court.

The tribe told the National Labor Relations Board that the United Auto Workers union intimidated employees of the Foxwoods Resort Casino. The tribe said ballots weren't provided in languages spoken by some of its card dealers.

"In light of what is at stake for all of Indian country, we must pursue this and it will require an appeal to the federal courts," Chairman Michael J. Thomas said in a letter cited by the local news media.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the NLRB's decision to apply federal labor law to tribal enterprises, such as casinos, on a case-by-case basis.
