NIGC to rule on Prairie Band land in Illinois

printer friendly
The National Indian Gaming Commission will be deciding on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's plans for a gaming facility in Illinois.

The tribe is currently based in Kansas. The tribe purchased land in Shabbona, Illinois, saying it was part of a historic reservation that was never extinguished by Congress.

Opponents, including the group DeKalb County Taxpayers Against the Casino, disagree and have urged the NIGC to rule that the Shabbona site does not qualify as "Indian lands" under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

One of the leaders of the group also says the state attorney general is disputing the tribe's claim.
