Opinion: Vote no on California gaming compacts

"It is very hard to believe the ads against the four Indian gaming propositions — 94, 95, 96 and 97.

It is also hard to believe the ads in favor of the measures.

It is hardest of all to believe that the detailed financial agreements between the state of California and several Native American tribes belong on the statewide ballot at all.

In our view, these contract negotiations between major gambling interests and their regulators should not be decided or affirmed by popular vote. We urge a “no” vote on all four measures, and we strongly urge the parties involved not to waste our time and their money by using the election process to get an edge on their competitors."
