Editorial: Connecticut gaming study long overdue

"There is no question the two casinos here in Eastern Connecticut have had an impact on our region -- both positive and negative. But to what degree has gambling -- both casino and state-sanctioned gaming -- affected the state? This has always been a question.

The state Division of Special Revenue announced this week it has approved a contract for a comprehensive, extensive study of gambling -- the first such study commission in more than 10 years. The study will be completed by early next year.

Because of the economic impact the casinos have had on Eastern Connecticut, and the state, it is important lawmakers and citizens have a clear understanding of those impacts. Among the issues to be explored in the study are the overall impact of gambling, the casino impact on our area and the incidences of chronic gambling. It also will gauge the public's desire for expanding, maintaining or reducing the amount of legalized gambling permitted in the state."
