Connecticut
Mashantucket Tribe hopes to attract conventions

With the opening of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in May, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is hoping to tap into the convention business.

The MGM facility will boast 115,000 square feet of new meeting space and a 4,000-seat theater. That's in addition to the 55,000 square feet of conference space at the existing Foxwoods Resort Casino.

"We are really putting a lot larger focus on the convention business," Joan Esneault, the vice-president of resort sales for Foxwoods and the MGM Grand, told The Hartford Courant.

The MGM casino beats the 100,000 square feet of meeting space offered at the nearby Mohegan Sun, which is owned by the Mohegan Tribe. Both tribes benefit from being in between New York and Boston, though the lack of a major airport is cited as a drawback.
