Connecticut tribes lobby against smoking ban

Connecticut tribes continue to lobby against legislation that would impose a ban on smoking at their casinos.

The Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation want to negotiate with the state. But some Democratic lawmakers want to force the tribes to ban smoking in areas where liquor is served.

”We are deeply disturbed by the Senate's decision to take up SB 419, the legislation attempting to ban smoking on Sovereign Tribal land,” Mohegan Chairman Bruce "Two Dogs" Bozsum said in a written statement that was quoted by The New London Day. .“This is the first attack on Native Sovereignty of its kind in the Nation.”

Gov Jodi Rell (R) has said she is willing to negotiate but talks have yet to start.
