Massachusetts tribes lobby on gaming issues

The two federally recognized tribes in Massachusetts have spent $341,000 on lobbying in the past 18 months, The Cape Cod Times reported.

The newly recognized Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe spent $221,000 on lobbyist salaries. The tribe is seeking state support for its land-into-trust application and, eventually, for a Class III gaming compact.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) spent 120,000 in the past 18 months. The tribe wanted to bid on one of the three commercial casinos that were part of failed state legislation.

Other expenditures included $21,000 by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, which formed a partnership to seek one of the commercial casinos.
