Seminole Tribe runs casinos without valid compact

The Seminole Tribe's is busy running seven casinos without a valid Class III gaming compact.

The Florida Supreme Court invalidated the compact in July. But no one from the federal government has told the tribe to stop offering slot machines and card games.

The Interior Department could step in and issue what are known as secretarial procedures to allow the games to continue. Gov. Charlie Crist (R) signed the invalidated compact facing such a threat.

Until that happens -- or a new deal is reached that passes legal muster -- it's business as usual for the Seminoles. "I agree the tribe could not conduct the games indefinitely without reaching a valid compact or without the Interior Department invoking procedures," attorney Barry Richard told The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

"But right now, the tribe has every legal right to continue, and stopping would mean a loss of money to the state and a loss of jobs that would never come back," Richard said.
