Editorial: Don't be a sucker for gaming in Ohio

"If you have ever set foot in Wheeling Island, a Las Vegas casino or the area skill-game parlors, you know the basic rule of gambling: The house always wins.

That being the case, why should it surprise anyone that the latest attempt to build an Ohio casino is another bad deal for the state?

The latest scheme would give two northeastern Ohio residents and an out-of-state casino operator a constitutional monopoly to build a gaming resort on Interstate 71 between Cincinnati and Columbus.

Given our proximity to two West Virginia casinos, few local residents would be likely to visit this casino. So the "My Ohio Now" group proposes to sweeten the pot by giving a token amount of cash to each Ohio county.

And based on the convoluted wording of the proposed constitutional amendment, those measly bucks would disappear if a Native American tribe succeeded in building a casino in the Buckeye State.

Our opposition to Issue 6 isn't a anti-gambling stance. This is a "don't be a sucker" stance."
