Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are pushing for a vote on liquor sales at the tribe's casino in North Carolina.
The tribal council authorized a referendum to sell liquor at Harrah’s
Cherokee Casino. But Chief Michell Hicks vetoed the request and said alcohol
goes against tribal values.
Tribal members circulated a petition to schedule a referendum on the issue. The signatures are being validated and it looks like enough were gathered to force a vote.
Supporters say liquor sales will increase revenues. Opponents fear a rise in alcohol addiction.
