Alabama-Coushatta Tribe hopes to reopen casino

The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas says gaming will bring jobs and revenue back to the reservation.

The tribe operated a successful Class III casino until it was shut down by the federal courts. Unemployment has skyrocketed to 32 percent as customers head to other states, including Oklahoma, to gamble.

"People are seeing $3 billion a year leaving the state, and these casinos are actually setting up right along the Texas border, so we think there is a great demand for gaming in Texas," Chairman Carlos Bullock told KHOU-TV.

A bill in the Texas Legislature would allow the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe and the Tigua Tribe to reopen their casinos. Supporters believe they have the votes this year.
