"The furor over a chunk of unincorporated land in the West Valley is what happens when the aggressive pursuits of vision and self-interest of formidable forces collide.

Glendale and the Tohono O'odham Nation are not on the same wavelength.

A resort-casino is not in the city's carefully crafted plan for a sports and entertainment district on its western edge. It sees a corporate center at 91st and Northern avenues, not Las Vegas.

Tohono O'odham Tribal Chairman Ned Norris says staying hush-hush about a half-billion-dollar project is standard business practice. But this is no standard business established under standard rules."
