Opinion: Oklahoma gaming boom won't last forever

"The logic is obvious: Any number of things could cool off Indian gaming, including the maturation of markets, increased competition, litigation, and regulation.

Two factors — the great number of tribes in the state and the high amount of the gambling money that comes in from out of state — make it difficult to say when the saturation point will come in Oklahoma.

Projected one way, Oklahoma tribes could continue to see double-digit growth rates for a long time.

On the other hand, if tribes in Texas are allowed to go into the gaming business in a big way, Oklahoma tribes could see a significant slowdown in their growth.

But the bottom line is obvious — at some point casinos aren't going to be a growth industry in the state perpetually and, in the long term, the only rational strategy for the tribes is diversification."
