St. Regis Mohawk Tribe seeks off-reservation change

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York is hoping for a change in the federal government's off-reservation gaming policy.

The Bush administration rejected the tribe's proposed casino in the Catskills, saying it was too far from the reservation. The tribe filed a lawsuit to challenge the decision but ended up dropping the project altogether.

The casino, however, could get back on track as the tribe hopes to convince the new administration of President Barack Obama to change off-reservation gaming policy at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Tribal leaders are taking a cautious approach "[b[ut we would be remiss not to take a look at our options for such a project," Chief James Ransom said in a statement, The Cornwall Standard-Freeholde reported.
