Deadline looms on compact for Seminole Tribe

Florida lawmakers have until Friday to agree on a Class III gaming compact for the Seminole Tribe.

The House and the Senate are poised to reach a compromise, one lawmaker said. The two chambers have been far apart on the issue, with the Senate proposing a major expansion of all types of gaming in the state while the House wanted to restrict the tribe to slot machines.

The tribe has been offering slot machines and card games under a compact that was struck down by the Florida Supreme Court. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs had already approved the agreement.

The tribe is willing to share hundreds of millions of dollars a year with the state but lawmakers disagree on the amounts.

In related news, Marco Rubio, the former Republican House Speaker, announced his run for the U.S. Senate in 2010. He was the lead plaintiff in the compact case and a primary critic of the deal.

Gov. Charlie Crist (R), who continues to support the tribe's gaming efforts, might enter the race as well.
