Mashantucket Tribe to host gaming conference

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut will host the first New England Gaming Summit next year.

The event will take place September 13-14 at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. It's produced by the groups that put on the East Coast Gaming Congress in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the Florida Gaming Summit and the New York Gaming Summit.

Connecticut's two federally recognized tribes operate casinos. Racetracks are legal in Rhode Island but federal law bars the Narragansett Tribe from engaging in gaming.

In Massachusetts, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is pursuing a casino under federal law. State lawmakers are considering legislation to authorize up to three commercial casinos.

Tribes in Maine are limited to bingo although non-Indian racetracks can operate slot machines.
