New CNIGA leader carries message of tribal unity

Daniel J. Tucker, the new chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, says tribes need to stay united as they face common challenges.

Tucker, the chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, said in a letter posted on Pechanga that he wants to develop a consensus among tribes. His main issues will be protecting sovereignty and ensuring exclusivity for tribal gaming.

"Tribal government gaming is entering a new era," Tucker wrote. "Many tribes are operating tribal enterprises that are well established, while others are still struggling toward self-reliance. Either way, threats to our sovereign governmental right affect us all equally. I believe unity is our best defense against any additional erosion of our rights."

Tucker also urged tribes to join CNIGA. Several tribes have left over the past few years and the membership is down to 23 tribes.

CNIGA holds its annual Western Indian Gaming Conference in Palm Springs from January 12-14, 2010.
