Little River Band signs compact for off-reservation casino

The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) signed new compact amendments for an off-reservation casino.

The amendments allow the tribe to pursue a casino at a former racetrack in Muskegon, about 80 miles from the reservation. In exchange, the tribe will share revenues with the local community and with the state.

The amendments depend on the tribe winning approval for its land-into-trust application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. According to news reports, the tribe will seek to have 60 acres of a 233-acre site placed in trust.

The amendments also depend on the state Legislature making a change to state law that will allow off-reservation casinos.
