Maine lawmakers to debate competing gaming proposals

Lawmakers in Maine are expected to debate three competing gaming proposals that could appear on the November ballot.

One proposal would allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe (Pleasant Point | Indian Township) and the Penobscot Nation to operate slot machines on their reservations. Another would authorize as many as three state-owned casinos, with preference given to tribal bidders.

A third would authorize a tribal casino in Washington County. The Passamaquoddy Tribe has supported this proposal.

Lawmakers could place any, all or none of the proposals on the ballot to compete with a proposed casino in Oxford County.

In past elections, state voters have rejected tribal casino but they have backed non-Indian gaming facilities.
