New York
County leader proposes casino site for Shinnecock Nation

The Shinnecock Nation is considering another potential gaming site.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano wants the tribe to build a casino next to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. He stressed that talks are in the early stages.

The tribe, due to gain federal recognition this summer, has been looking at various sites throughout Long Island. The reservation is on the far east end of the island, where development would generate significant opposition.

But sites that are too far from the reservation could pose a problem because regulations finalized by the Bush administration place some restrictions on newly recognized tribes. Although the rule does not contain a strict mileage limit, it suggests that the gaming site be within 25 miles of tribal headquarters.
