Hearing scheduled in Tohono O'odham Nation casino lawsuit

Judge John Bates has scheduled a hearing in Tohono O'odham Nation v. Salazar.

The Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona filed a lawsuit against the Interior Department in hopes of forcing a decision on its land-into-trust application. The tribe says officials in Washington, D.C., have taken no action in more than a year.

The Obama administration wants the lawsuit dismissed. Government attorneys say the court can't tell Interior when, or how, to make a decision.

The Gila River Indian Community is seeking to intervene in the case. The tribe says the Tohono O'odham Nation is encroaching on its aboriginal territory with the land-into-trust application. The Tohono O'odham site is in Glendale, about 8 miles from the Gila River Reservation. The tribe plans to use the land for a casino.

The hearing will take place on June 21, at 2pm in Courtroom 8 of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
