St. Regis Mohawk Tribe splits from off-reservation casino partner

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has cut ties with Empire Resorts for an off-reservation casino in the Catskills region of New York.

The tribe said it was unable to reach an agreement to purchase a racetrack from Empire. The deal would have turned the Monticello Casino & Raceway into a tribal facility.

The tribe said it would continue to pursue a casino in the Catskills by considering other partners and other sites. That would require the tribe to start the land-into-trust process all over again.
