Union urges Mashantucket Tribe to accept results of vote at casino

The United Food and Commercial Workers is urging the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut not to challenge the results of a labor election.

Bartenders, bar porters and bar servers at Foxwoods Resort Casino to organize under an election that was supervised by the National Labor Relations Board. A prior vote that took place under tribal law failed.

“We were the first union at Foxwoods to hold an election under tribal law,” union president Brian Petronella told The Norwich Bulletin. “We’re not trying to insult their sovereignty.”

The tribe said it would challenge the results of the NLRB election "through all appropriate legal channels" although officials haven't said whether they will go to court.
