The city of Glendale, Arizona, has spent $630,000 on lawsuit against the Tohono O'odham Nation off-reservation casino.

The case is still in the early stages. But the city already has hired five law firms in hopes of blocking the casino and has tried to recruit other plaintiffs -- including 13 lawmakers whose motion to intervene was rejected earlier this week.

"The interests of the legislators are aligned with those of the city and their arguments are consistent with ours, so it is a legitimate and legal use of those funds," city spokeswoman Julie Frisoni told The Arizona Republic. The city paid for the lawmakers' legal fees.
