City appeals ruling in Mashpee Wampanoag casino land lawsuit

Officials in Fall River, Massachusetts, have appealed a decision that blocked the sale of land to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

The Fall River Redevelopment Authority entered into an agreement to sell 300 acres to the tribe for $21 million. But a group of taxpayers -- including the leader of a state-recognized tribe -- says the deal violates state law because casino gambling hasn't been authorized at the site.

"It's like putting the cart before the horse," Lesley Rich, an attorney for the taxpayers, told The Cape Cod Times. "They need to change the law before they sell the land."

The tribe has already included the site in its land-into-trust application.
