The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is taking advantage of low interest rates and low construction costs for its new casino.
The tribe hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the $85 million project on Tuesday. Chief Glenda Wallace said now is the best time to build.
"Some may wonder why we have chosen to build in an economy many would consider dangerous, but we are preparing for the future of our tribal citizens as an opportunity," Wallace said at the ceremony, The Neosho Daily News reported. "Interest rates are lower than they have ever been and construction costs are lower than they have been in years."
The new Bordertown Casino is expected to open in January 2013.
