City clearing path for Manzanita Band off-reservation casino bid

The Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Nation could finally see action on its off-reservation casino in the city of Calexico, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The tribe submitted a land-into-trust application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. But a lawsuit has prevented the city from transferring land to the tribe as part of the project.

The lawsuit has been settled and the city is now resolving land use, planning and other issues. The changes will take effect in December.
