Editorial: Too soon to bet on off-reservation casino in Michigan

"Recent speculation aside, a casino coming to Lansing is, at this point, a remote possibility at best.

Still, the community should have a chance to consider a casino as a possible means of economic development and tax revenue. Under current laws, it cannot. That's unfortunate.

The most recent interest in a Lansing casino apparently involves the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, although neither the tribe nor the city has confirmed details of discussions.

A tribal casino would have to meet stringent rules of the federal Indian Gaming Act of 1988 and the state's tribal gaming compacts. Bringing a tribal casino to Lansing likely would take years of effort - effort that may not succeed."
