Eastern Cherokee businesses support liquor beyond casino

Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who own businesses are supporting a referendum to allow the sale of alcohol beyond the tribe's casino.

Business owners say expanded alcohol sales will boost the economy on the reservation. “It is imperative that our restaurants have alcohol," Morgan Owle-Crisp told The Smoky Mountain News.

The tribe authorized alcohol at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino in 2009. The proposed referendum could allow liquor at a tribal-owned store or at tribal member establishments.

The casino is already facing competition from Jackson County, where alcohol sales will be on the ballot in May 2012.
