Shakopee Tribe spreads its wealth thanks to successful casino

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota donated over $28 million to tribes, Indian organizations and non-profits and loaned another $60 million to tribes in the last fiscal year, all thanks to Indian gaming.

The tribe operates the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel outside of Minneapolis. Its success has meant millions for needy tribes and organizations across Indian Country.

"Before Indian gaming, many of us lived in poverty and struggled to survive. Times were hard. Now we are able to help others,” said Chairman Stanley R. Crooks said in a press release.

In the last 13 fiscal years, the tribe has donated more than $192.7 million to tribes and charities.
