Kickapoo Tribe wants city to annex site of proposed casino

The Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma is seeking to open another casino.

The tribe is planning to build on 59 acres of trust land near Shawnee. The tribe has asked the city to annex the property in order to access police, fire and other municipal services.

The request has been under consideration since a public meeting last month. No decision has been made but Citizen Potawatomi Nation Chairman John A. “Rocky” Barrett urged city commissioners to consider the legal ramifications of annexing land that is already in trust.

The Citizen Potawatomi Nation operates two casinos in the area. The Kickapoo Tribe owns the Kickapoo Casino.
