Another tribe opposed to off-reservation casino in Michigan

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians announced plans for an off-reservation casino on Monday, drawing opposition from other Michigan tribes.

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians are already threatening a lawsuit. They say the Soo Tribe "stands no chance" of gaining federal approval for the project.

The Soo Tribe wants to build a $245 million gaming facility in downtown Lansing. Mayor Virg Bernero supports the casino, which he said will generate jobs and revenue for the community.

Downtown Lansing is about 287 miles from tribal headquarters in Sault Ste. Marie.
