Debate continues over gaming expansion efforts in Michigan

Michigan is home to more than two dozen casinos and more could be on the way if some tribes and some non-Indian developers have their way.

The Bay Mills Indian Community opened an off-reservation casino that has been the subject of litigation. The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals recently lifted an injunction against the casino but the tribe hasn't said whether it will be reopened.

Meanwhile, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians are making plans for off-reservation casinos. The Sault Tribe appears to be the farthest along in the process.

But non-Indian developers are also trying to get in the game with a ballot proposal to open up to eight casinos across the state. The issue was knocked off the November ballot but an appeal has been filed.
