Marge Anderson and Quapaw Tribe honored at NIGA meet

The National Indian Gaming Association handed out special honors at its recent convention.

Marge Anderson, the chief executive of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Indians in Minnesota, received the Tim Wapato Sovereign Warrior Award. She was recognized for her lifetime of work in protecting tribal sovereignty and Indian gaming.

The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma received the Wendell A. Chino Humanitarian Award, the first time a tribe itself has won the award. The tribe was recognized for helping the victims of a tornado in Joplin, Missouri, in May 2011.
