Karuk Tribe hopes to improve local economy with casino

The Karuk Tribe of California plans to employ more than 200 people at its first casino.

The tribe has spent nearly a decade trying to gain approval for the casino. Word finally came on Monday with a new Indian lands determination from the National Indian Gaming Commission.

"We believe this will provide critically needed jobs and business revenues to the area for Indians and non-Indians alike," council member Dora Bernal told The Siskiyou Daily News.

The tribe is still working on the details of the casino, Bernal said.
