Narragansett Tribe meets governor to discuss gaming issue

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas of the Narragansett Tribe and Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) met on Tuesday to discuss gaming issues.

Thomas told The Providence Journal he wanted to tell Chafee "about the ups we think the state would have if they did gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.'' Currently the tribe is barred from following the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act under a rider that was drafted by Chafee's father in the Senate.

The tribe is disputing the legality of ballot proposals to authorize table games at two non-Indian gaming facilities. An appeal is pending after a judge ruled against the tribe.
