Fort Sill Apache Tribe sees support for New Mexico casino bid

The Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma is gaining support for its casino in southern New Mexico.

The city council in Las Cruces passed a resolution welcoming the tribe back to its homeland. The tribe has a 30-acre reservation about forty miles west of Las Cruces.

The land is held in trust but it hasn't been deemed eligible for gaming. The tribe is seeking approval under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The Mescalero Apache Nation has expressed opposition to the project.
