Menominee Nation awaits decision on off-reservation casino

The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin expects to receive a decision on its off-reservation casino this spring, Chairman Craig Corn said.

The tribe wants to build a casino in Kenosha, about 200 miles from the reservation. An agreement with the Kenosha County Board expires March 28 so Corn wants a two-year extension in anticipation of approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and from Gov. Scott Walker (R).

“We figure in the next month we should have federal approval, and we are trying to get (the length of the agreement) to coincide with the time the governor would have to give his approval,” Corn told county officials, The Kenosha News reported.

If the BIA approves the casino, Walker has a year to weigh in under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
