Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe tops list of casino lobbying in 2012

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts ramped up its lobbying expenditures in 2012 even as the rest of the gaming industry spent less, the Associated Press reports.

The tribe spent more than double the $277,000 from 2011, the AP reported. The lobbying was tied to the tribe's negotiations for a Class III gaming compact, which required approval by state lawmakers, and its push for a casino license, which required appearances before a new state regulatory agency.

Overall, gaming interests spent $2.3 million in 2012, down from $3.1 million in 2011, the AP reported.
