A state court in California is hearing a lawsuit today that challenges the Class III gaming compact for the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians.

The tribe is not named in the suit. Instead, Stand Up for California claims Gov. Jerry Brown (D) exceeded his authority when he signed the agreement.

The compact was ratified by the Legislature amid opposition from tribes with existing casinos. The North Fork facility is the first in California approved under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
