It could be a few more days before Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) announces a decision on the Menominee Nation off-reservation casino.

Walker said he will consider a range of issues -- including jobs -- before he takes action. “It’s a really important decision,” the governor told WITI.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the casino under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The law gives Walker veto authority over the project.

In the history of IGRA, only three tribes have completed both steps of the process and have opened casinos. One is the the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, whose off-reservation casino is about 40 miles from Kenosha and whose leaders oppose the Menominee casino.

Two additional tribes, both in California, have completed both steps. But they have yet to open casinos due to litigation.
