Electronic gaming machines generate big revenue in Oregon

The state of Oregon operates more electronic gaming machines than all the tribes combined.

The state operates more than 12,000 video slot and poker machines, compared with about 7,600 at tribal casinos, The Oregonian reported. The machines are the state's second biggest source of revenue, behind income tax.

And unlike tribal casinos that are restricted to reservations and Indian lands, gaming machines can be found in restaurants, lounges and venues across the state. About 2,500 retailers offer the games.

“They’re everywhere,” Tim Murphy, the executive director of a treatment clinic, told the paper. “I can look out my window and see four places where I can play video poker or slots.”
