Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and state discuss compact with BIA

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the state of Massachusetts met with the Bureau of Indian Affairs last week to discuss their Class III gaming compact.

The BIA rejected the compact that was negotiated last year due to an excessive revenue sharing rate. This time, both parties want to make sure they get it right.

"The reports were that it was a pretty positive meeting," Gov. Deval Patrick (D) told members of the media on Monday, The Cape Cod Times reported.

"I, along with other representatives of the tribe and representatives of the commonwealth had a very productive and helpful meeting with the Department of the Interior last week," Chairman Cedric Cromwell told the paper. "We expect to have positive news on a new compact soon."
