Lawsuit challenges governor's approval of North Fork casino

A new lawsuit seeks to stop the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians from opening an off-reservation casino in California.

Gov. Jerry Brown (D) approved the casino under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. A group called Stand Up For California says he lacked the authority to do so.

"Nothing in the California Constitution gives the governor the power to consent to taking land into trust for gaming," the group said in a press release.

The lawsuit was filed in state court. The casino is also being litigated in federal court.
