Lac du Flambeau Band hosts meeting on off-reservation casino

The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians held a public meeting last night on its proposed off-reservation casino in Shullsburg, Wisconsin.

The tribe plans to build a $50 million casino on a 20-acre site in the city. A land-into-trust application has been submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a process that will take at least two years, tribal leaders said at the meeting.

The Bush administration first rejected the proposal in January 2008 under a guidance memo that said Shullsburg was too far from the reservation to benefit tribal members. The Obama administration rescinded the memo.

Shullsburg is about 300 miles from tribal headquarters.
