Little Traverse Bay Bands see positive reception to casino plan

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in Michigan tried for a second casino in 2003 but opposition killed the plan before it got off the ground.

This time around, the tribe is making a much more favorable impression in Mackinaw City. Local leaders, business owners and residents spoke in favor of a $26 million casino in their village.

There was still some opposition though. Religious leaders and a handful of tribal members said the second casino was a bad idea.

The tribal-state Class III gaming compact authorizes two casinos but local approval is needed. Mackinaw City is about 39 miles from the tribe's Odawa Casino Resort.
