North Fork Rancheria off-reservation gaming pact clears vote

The California Assembly ratified a Class III gaming compact for the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians on Thursday but only with the minimum number of votes.

The compact authorizes an off-reservation casino on a 305-acre site in Madera County. It drew opposition from tribes with existing casinos, including some hundreds of miles away from the site.

The compact now goes to the state Senate. If it passes, it can be sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for review.

Rival tribes are already suing the BIA in hopes of stopping the casino.
