House hearing on bill to block Tohono O'odham Nation casino

The House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs meets on Thursday to consider H.R.1410, a bill that would prevent the Tohono O'odham Nation from opening an off-reservation casino in Arizona.

The tribe has won a series of rulings in the federal and state courts in its quest to build the West Valley Resort in the Phoenix area. The bill overrides the tribe's right to engage in any form of gaming at the site.

Rival tribes that already operate casinos in the Phoenix area support the bill, which doesn't mention the Tohono O'odham Nation by name.

The hearing takes place at 2pm in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building.
