Mashantucket Tribe faces competition for casino in Catskills

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut faces competition for a potential commercial casino in the Catskills.

The tribe announced plans for a $500 million casino on a 500-acre site in Liberty. But at least three other groups -- including the Mohegan Tribe -- are also interested in the Catskills, a region about 90 minutes north of New York City.

The plan depends on voter authorization of commercial gaming. Legislation proposed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) calls for just one casino in the Catskills.
