Navajo Nation Council weighs liquor sales at Arizona casinos

The Navajo Nation Council is debating a bill to allow the sale of liquor at gaming facilities in Arizona.

The tribe recently opened the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort, its first in Arizona. The sponsor of the bill says liquor sales will ensure the facility stays competitive.

"The gaming industry is very competitive and in order for us to compete at a high level, we need to adjust some laws that we have in place,” Delegate Mel Begay said at a hearing yesterday.

The council's Law and Order Committee approved Legislation No. 0165-13 by a 4-1 vote. The bill will now go to the Naabik’íyátí Committee for consideration.
